From identity theft to credit card fraud, it seems there is always some sort of scam going on.  We've talked previously about traveler check scams and now the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) have posted recent detected scams on plain old CHECKS.  Yes, the fake check scam is amongst us.  Fake check scams can leave you holding the bag.  The scammers often claim to be outside the U.S., saying they cannot pay you directly, and that they will have someone who owes them money send you a check or money order.  The amount of the check or money order may be more than you are owed, so you are instructed to deposit it and wire the balance to the scammer or to someone else.

Many of these checks look so real that even we cannot tell the difference.  There has even been a report from 10 credit unions claiming their official checks have been counterfeited.  Anytime you receive a check you should verify funds with the financial institution it is drawn on.  Do not use any of the money until you deposit the check and it clears, or you can go to that institution and cash it.

CAUTIONIt is important to keep in mind that under the law, you are responsible for the checks and money orders you deposit because you are in the best position to determine how risky the transaction is.  When a check or money order bounces, you owe your financial institution the money you withdrew.

We believe in helping our members receive the best of everything, including insurance.  Last year, our credit union processed over $1,000,000 in automobile loans.  We encourage you to protect your investment wisely.  If you've settled for stripped-down service to save on rates, you may be missing a lot more than you realize.  It pays to know the difference between apples and oranges.  There is a local Allstate Insurance Agent in our community that can help.  He can show you the difference a "full-service" agent can make with a FREE, NO-OBLIGATION auto insurance review.  It saved me money and even gave me better coverage.  Call Peter Herbert today at (315) 468-3254.  Make sure you tell him that you are a P&C Employees Federal Credit Union member.
